Google Is Freaking Out About This Bill
I don't know if you remember or not, but I actually recorded a video telling you guys about this bill in the Senate. S.2992 - the American Innovation and Choice Online Act. It actually has bipartisan support (championed by Amy Klobuchar and Chuck Grassley), which is probably REALLY freaking Google out because it's more likely this will pass.
Also known as the "American Innovation and Choice Online Act" this bill threatens Google's (and other #BigTech companies) ability to prevent competition, including from people like you and I. One of the main concerns that I reported in the past was that it would force Google and Apple to allow competing app stores on their devices. This is a VERY BIG deal... Imagine if there was a #ParallelEconomy app store and apps like Gab were allowed on it? That would open the social media ecosystem up bigly! <-- š¤£ One of my favorite Trumpisms...
For a little more background, here is the summary for S.2992:
This bill prohibits certain large online platforms from engaging in specified acts, including giving preference to their own products on the platform, unfairly limiting the availability on the platform of competing products from another business, or discriminating in the application or enforcement of the platform's terms of service among similarly situated users.
Further, a platform may not materially restrict or impede the capacity of a competing business user to access or interoperate with the same platform, operating system, or hardware or software features. The bill also restricts the platform's use of nonpublic data obtained from or generated on the platform and prohibits the platform from restricting access to platform data generated by the activity of a competing business user. The bill also provides additional restrictions related to installing or uninstalling software, search or ranking functionality, and retaliation for contact with law enforcement regarding actual or potential violations of law.
The bill establishes affirmative defenses for the prohibited conduct.
The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice must designate whether an entity is a platform covered by the bill, and both must carry out enforcement activities.
The bill also provides for civil penalties, injunctions, and the forfeit of profits for repeat offenders.'

Now, recently, Google decided that they would have their Vice President of Engineering for Privacy, Safety and Security pen a letter relaying all the horrible consequences of forcing competition in the tech space. You won't believe the argument they used... lol... Get this, they said that it would make it harder for them to censor misinformation!!! š¤”š¤”š¤”
You can check out the letter they wrote here:
https://blog.google/outreach-initiatives/public-policy/how-congress-anti-tech-bill-undermines-security/
Here's a snippet from the letter, "by prohibiting us from ādiscriminatingā against competitors, the bill would prevent us from taking action against purveyors of malicious content. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, we have been able to move quickly to limit Russian propaganda and disinformation, even as that content has migrated to new channels. The proposed legislation could undermine this work."
It's clear they are pushing the Russia angle, but you and I know that what they really mean is, "we won't be able to censor those conservatives like you want us to..." I also found a great article on this topic from ReclaimTheNet. You should check it out as well:

So, in short, Google is afraid they won't be able to censor all the things! This is just awesome! It's really odd that a liberal (Klobuchar) is pushing this bill through, but it is increasingly looking like it's going to happen...
God Bless,
Noah
